Gary Player tees up for the Masters record
South African golfing legend Gary Player will make history today as he hits the green at the Augusta National Golf Club for what will officially be his 51st Masters Tournament.
Surpassing the record for the most Masters starts, set by Arnold Palmer and matched by Player last year, the 72 year old champion told Philadelphia Daily News; "The Masters has a very special place in my heart, and has played a significant role in my life. This year is poignant, because I have been privileged to walk Augusta's fairways with most of the game's greats."
In an illustrious career, Gary Player won nine major tournaments including three Masters. His first Masters win came in 1961 and made him the first non-American to wear the prized green jacket.
His last Masters win took place exactly thirty years ago at Augusta National Golf Club in 1978.
Player who prides himself on his health says "It's a thrill playing there for my 51st occasion and the reason that I'm so thrilled about it is because I've exercised diligently, profusely, for 64 years."
"My motivation is that I want to show the world and youngsters in particular, that if you look after your body you can be productive and successful for a very long time."
Speaking to Augusta National Press, the 1991 Masters champion Ian Woosman marveled at Player's longevity.
"When I'm his age, I won't be as excited as he is," fifty year old Woosman said, "I'll be excited just to be walking around."
Other South African golfers competing in this year’s Masters include Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Tim Clark, Trevor Immelman, Rory Sabbatini and Richard Sterne.
